‘What is the use of high technology, if we do not know the soul of the craft’

During my time studying A level Fashion & Textiles, I was always taught be very experimental with my sampling, designing and in the end with making my final garments/textile pieces by incorporating a range of Textile practices. However when I started on my Foundation year we were taught to think about how our samples and designs could be adapted for industry. Which today usually means mass production to keep the costs low.

During our presentation today we were shown this quote, ‘What is the use of high technology, if we do not know the soul of the craft’ said by Junichi Arai a weaver. This quote is really inspirational to me as the use of high technology and mass production allows designers the chance to share their creations with people across the world, although understanding the methods is great for the designer and consumer a like. As it gives people the chance to understand the hard work and persistence that went into creating the original textiles techniques and would be such a shame for the skills to die out completely.
